Area: Positano, Italy
Price guide: £200/night
Stay: 1 night on a driving tour of Italy
Comment
The first thing you note about Covi Dei Saraceni is that you can’t get there, or
rather you can’t drive there. You see the whole of Positano is built into the
mountain and every little space on the mountain has a building embedded. And
those buildings have buildings, and there are buildings on those. There probably
was a road once, but there isn’t anymore, it got swallowed up by buildings!
Positano does have a road though – it has a single road that runs a small way
down the mountain, and straight back up. So of course the question to the hotel
is “how do I get to you?!”. Well there’s a multi-storey car park on this road,
but you’re not allowed into it – you drive into the top level and leave your car
with them (something I’m always nervous about since watching Ferris Bueller!),
they give you a ticket and park it for you. You then give your luggage to a chap
on a thin version of a Golf caddy – with room for a driver and luggage, and
certainly not passengers, tell him which hotel you’re in, and walk the rest of
the way to the hotel. A little apprehensive but as the hotel told us this was
the procedure, we figured it must be ok!
Although the walk is about 15 minutes, it’s quite nice. You pass many shops,
cross some bridges, the beach, and then come across the hotel, which being right
on the beach front, does look utterly delightful! As you climb up the steps to
reception you’re pleasantly surprised to see your bags made it, and in one
piece. You check in and are shown to your room, and for us we had the whole of
the 4th floor – despite there being only 1 room on it.
The bathroom was cute, the bedroom ok, and at the other end of a long corridor,
and the balcony was just divine. Fantastic. Incredibly wonderful views with
complete privacy. The balcony had an enclosed glass bit (for when it’s raining
or windy I guess) and the rest of it outside and built into the rock. We spent
quite a bit of time here doing nothing
Walking around Positano was lovely. More touristy than we were expecting, but
still nice. We looked for somewhere ‘cute’ to eat, but decided that actually the
best place was in the hotel itself. The meal was nice, service reasonable and
‘ok’ value for money, but nothing special apart from the view.
In the morning we found the breakfast room, which was really quite stunning as
it is the room that overhangs the front, as seen on all the pictures. The early
morning sun shone directly through the windows and the setting was glorious. I
think I ate breakfast, but I might have just sat there sipping tea! Lovely.
We also had a go on their terrace pool that we forgot they had. This is a really
nice pool on top of the building (but still overlooked by many others!), bar
area and sunloungers. We spent about 3 hours here until it was time to go.
Checking out, they called another bellboy to take the luggage up to the car park
and set off on the long (but nice) hike. We’d asked the garage to clean the car
whilst they had it, but they misunderstood “clean” to “polish to within an inch
of its life”! I was very impressed as it didn’t look that shiny when I bought
it! Anyway, I paid the bill, plus the 37 Euro charge to clean it (which in
hindsight was good value for a valet of that level!) and left, heading down the
tight, twisty one way road back out and onto Ravello.
Summary: Yep, Covi Dei Saraceni certainly gets it. Big thumbs up. Lovely place
in without doubt the best position in Positano. Absolutely glorious!
