The skylight
in the dining area is proportionally quite large. With the reduced size
of the dining room (due to the dog leg) and hence roof surface area we
went back to the structural engineer to ensure there was enough
strength.

The builder
has highlighted this as being of concern. These steels are sitting on a
relatively small padstone, with a new doorway to the right and to the
left the old doorway that the architect has advised has just a bit of
board to fill. There doesn't seem to be all that much strength in there
and the builder is checking with the building control officer and
suggesting he brick the old doorway up. Compare the support of
this steel to another one....
Look at the
difference in size of this padstone and that it has a vertical column..
Either one is too much or the other is
not enough!

I purchased two 600 x 3000 x 40 for the
main surfaces and the long 'shelf' in the utility area (Mmm, perhaps a
little over the top for a utility room!) and a 900 x 3000 x 40 for
the island.
